Travel Stories From a Guy Who’d Rather be Drinking Beer Somewhere!
Real travel experiences. Honest destination guides. Expert advice from professional travel advisors.
(Beer optional but highly recommended.)
Welcome, Fellow Adventurers!
I gotta be honest with you. I never set out to become a travel writer. Or a travel advisor, for that matter. But somewhere between retiring, exploring the globe with the better half, and realizing we’d probably visited more breweries than most people visit grocery stores, it seemed like maybe we had something worth sharing.

This travel blog shares authentic travel experiences, destination guides, and practical travel tips—the kind of real advice that comes with jet lag, wrong turns, and the occasional “I told you we should’ve turned left.” From huffing and puffing my way up the Great Wall (the missus practically skipped up like a mountain goat) to finding a Caribbean brewery that makes a good pairing for a family beach day, I write about actual travel, not Instagram perfection.

But understand. These stories aren’t just for entertainment (though I hope they’re at least a little entertaining). They’re also born from years of actually planning travel for ourselves and for clients through Boarding Pass Travel, where the boss and I work as professional travel advisors based in Canada. That’s right—we travel and sell travel. Long story. Great beer scene.

What Makes The Beery Traveler Different?
I’m not some influencer with a ring light and a carefully curated Instagram feed. I’m just a retired guy who loves three things: good beer, great destinations, and traveling with someone who keeps me from getting too lost (she prefers “provides navigational assistance,” but let’s be real here).
We’ve done the multi-generational tropical trip with our sons—which taught me that coordinating four adults’ vacation preferences requires the diplomatic skills of a UN negotiator and the patience of a saint. We’ve explored the Algarve region of Portugal, where I discovered that Portuguese beer is criminally underrated. We’ve navigated Caribbean cruises and figured out which islands are worth the stop and which ones are basically just jewelry stores with palm trees.
We’ve discovered budget travel strategies that actually work (spoiler: eating where locals eat saves money AND gets you better food). We’ve tackled adventure destinations that deliver genuine thrills without requiring extreme athlete status—because at our age, “extreme” means booking a flight with only one connection.
And through it all, I’ve learned that the best trips aren’t the ones you piece together from random blog posts at 2 AM while finishing that third glass of wine. They’re the ones where someone who knows what they’re doing—someone who’s actually been there, made those mistakes, and learned those lessons—helps you avoid the pitfalls.
That someone? Often that’s us, through our work at Boarding Pass Travel.
What This Travel Blog Covers (Besides Beer)
DESTINATION GUIDES
In-depth guides to destinations we’ve actually visited, from Ecuador’s incredible biodiversity to Spain’s hidden brewery gems in Galicia. Real experiences, honest assessments, and the details that matter—like where to find the good local beer.
BUDGET TRAVEL TIPS
Practical strategies for traveling on a budget without sacrificing experiences or dignity. We’ve explored the world without trust fund backing—I can help you do the same. Though I won’t apologize for spending a little extra on craft beer. A man has priorities.
CRUISE PLANNING ADVICE
Expert guidance on choosing between ocean and river cruises, selecting itineraries that actually deliver, and maximizing cruise experiences. Including the critical question: which cruise lines have the best beer selection? (Don’t laugh, this matters more than you think.)
ADVENTURE DESTINATIONS
From mountain treks to wildlife encounters, we cover adventure destinations that challenge and inspire without requiring you to be Bear Grylls. If I can do it with creaky knees and a beer belly, you can too.
BEACH GETAWAYS
The best beaches for relaxation, sunset watching, and yes—finding a cold local beer while your toes are in the sand. Because what’s the point of paradise if the beer is warm?
CRAFT BEER & TRAVEL
Great destinations and good beer often go hand in hand. I find the local breweries worth visiting in every destination we cover. Consider it a public service.
REAL TRAVEL ADVICE
The stuff nobody tells you until it’s too late. Like why you should always pack an extra shirt in your carry-on (trust me on this), how to survive timeshare presentations, and which travel insurance actually works when things go sideways.
